Traveling to Ely, MN it’s hard to decide whether to stay in town to enjoy shopping, dining and galleries, or head to a lodge or cabin nearby to enjoy boating, fishing and canoeing. Staying at Grand Ely Lodge means you don’t have to decide.

Though it’s just a mile from downtown, Grand Ely Lodge is situated on Shagawa Lake and surrounded by water and trees, making you feel further away. Many of the Lodge’s 61 rooms overlook the lake, and include log-style furniture for a northwoods feel.

On site, a game room, marina, restaurant and lounge mean you don’t have to go far once you check in. But you won’t want to stay inside long – the Lodge offers pontoon and fishing boat rentals, canoes and kayaks, paddle boats, bikes, a horseshoe course and a fire pit. Rentals are free, except pontoon and boat rentals, which have hourly to daily rates.

In the winter, the Lodge opens ice fishing houses on the lake, just outside the Lodge doors. The Lodge is also on the edge of hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile and cross country ski trails.

When to Go:
Visit year round for an Ely, MN weekend getaway for some of the best recreation in the state. Enjoy snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and dogsledding in the winter, or fishing, boating and canoeing in the summer. Don’t worry about the weather – in case of rain you’re nearby many shops and galleries that will fill your afternoon.  In the fall, Ely offers spectacular views of the fall leaves.

Getting There:
Ely is about four hours north of the Twin Cities and two hours north of Duluth, MN.  Take Hwy 169 and continue as it becomes Hwy 1, all the way into Ely. From the North Shore, take Hwy 1 northwest, just after Silver Bay.

While You’re There:
You can’t visit Ely, the “Canoe Capitol of the World” without taking a canoe trip. Plan an adventure or a short trip – free canoe rentals are available at the Lodge, or one of the many outfitters in town will prepare you for a longer trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

In town, visit shops like Wintergreen Northern Wear, Steger Mukluks or one of the many gallery and gift shops.

Nearby, tour the Soudan Underground Mine, the state’s oldest iron ore mine.
